    Darkhan, Mongolia, 2023

A Landmark of Contemporary Urban Architecture
This modern ice hockey arena in Darkhan, Mongolia, exemplifies how sports architecture can blend functionality with aesthetic innovation. Drawing on experience from the Sochi 2014 Ice Skating Oval (together with Studio Zoppini Architects), the arena features a distinct silhouette with an expansive overhanging roof and integrated lighting, creating a dynamic visual presence.
The facade embodies a masterful interplay between engineering and nature. Constructed from aluminum panels of varying thickness, the exterior mimics glacial landscapes. The dark panels evoke rugged rock, while smoother bluish panels represent the fluid grain of ice. Infused with blue hues sampled from pictures of glacial formations, the facade gains depth and authenticity, connecting the building to the natural world. This innovative use of materials and color creates a layered, tactile surface.
Functionality and accessibility are central to the design, positioning the arena as a vibrant community hub. The interior is conceived to meet international World Cup requirements, featuring four changing rooms, two referees' rooms, medical/training facilities, two bars, a restaurant, and VIP seating. Sightlines are optimized for every spectator, and acoustics are calibrated to balance crowd noise with announcement clarity.
The arena stands as an important landmark in Darkhan's skyline, synthesizing modern technology, sustainable practices, and community focus. It serves as a catalyst for public engagement and urban revitalization, hinting at a future where sports venues seamlessly integrate with the urban environment.
